    Thanks bottlerocket!

If you have the ability, any chance you can post the dynamic range information? Thinking of pulling the trigger on this one, and I have been bitten to many times by HDTracks.

    Who me? Impulsive?

I think I could listen to Redemption Song all night long..

Waveform and Spectrum graphs attached for a few more songs. I only included one waveform, as they all are blissfully similar, indicating that you can use your volume control as your God intended, by turning it up instead of down.

Please note, HDTracks indicates that two songs are 24/48, as that was the only format available. I have included one spectrum graph of the 24/48 Get Up, Stand Up.

On a side note, this release got me thinking about the CD folders (shudder) with all my wife's music stored in them. A while back, I took most of this music and burned it to mp3 320k for use in iTunes.

Looking at the server backup, I see a Bob Marley folder. So I track down the CD folder, blow off the dust, and low and behold, there is a Tuff Gong copy of Legends, remastered by the wonderful Mr. Barry Diament. So I get to scratch another CD off my must find list, and I have an excellent redbook copy that I can compare to!

Yep, Barry's Redbook vs hi-res that may be pretty well recorded itself is a classic dilemma, and I'd like to know what your impression is as well.

Can't do a subjective comparison until I listen to this at home, work DAC is only capable of 24/96.

I have done some Audacity wrangling (I am an Audacity Cowboy wanna be), and wanted to post a couple of tracks for people to look at. The CD is a bit louder, and has very light clipping in a few songs.

Thanks! Appreciated! To make it perfect, could I ask you to post the spectrum analysis plot as well?

    Here you go.

Still don't understand the 'too much selected, taking the first xxx seconds' thing in Audacity. Since the CD is the first 237s, and the 24/192 the first 53s, isn't it comparing apples to oranges?

Funny enough converted the Tuff Gong copy of Legends the other day, but have two version of this album, the other one which has been stored up in loft has two extra tracks on it.

So many great tracks on this, but I do like Waiting in vain.

    Cheers Frank

The spectrum analyser has a max limit to the number of frames (samples per channel) it will accept. About 10.5 million, I guess. The higher the sample rate, the less time covered by a given number of samples. Yes, you'll compare apples to oranges unless you select the same time interval in the tracks being compared.

That's what I thought, more of what I don't understand is how to select the same time interval on the two different tracks and plot. I guess use the lesser time interval of the higher res audio, and select the same in the CD audio. Adjust where you take the interval from if the music has an extended, quiet opening. Now that I have a game plan, I can attempt to put it into action.

    This might help...

Open both tracks in the one window.
Use the shift tool to align them if necessary.
Select the interval for measurement in one track; ensure the dark selected region is visible in only one track.
    Analyse spectrum and take screenshot.
Switch to the same interval in only the other track, without having to redefine the interval, by pressing Shift key while clicking just below the name to the left of the first track then similarly Shift clicking the second track. Be careful not to move the gain or balance slider.
    Analyse spectrum and take screenshot.

    compared with Barry's

First of all Barry's remaster is wonderful and I don't think I'll stop listening to it since I've downloaded this 24/192 done by Bruce from an Island safety.

The main difference is in the depth of the sound stage which goes way back with the 24/192. Barry's remaster is more up front. Also, the 24/192 less hard, more like listening to a tape. This is a very nice remaster and I am "jamming" to it.

"..done by Bruce.." = Bruce Brown, Puget Sound Studios ?
"..Island safety.." = Island Records safety master copy ?

Just checking, as I am in here to learn as well as enjoy!

I have been playing the first few tracks from both the CD and 24/192, and after adjusting the volume on the CD tracks -2db, the difference is subtle at best. First thing I noticed was his voice on Three Little Birds seemed more 'recessed'. Now that the kids are put to bed, as soon as Cara Dillon stops playing (daughter likes to fall asleep to it), i can give it a good listen with the headphones.

Just finished listening to the the HDTracks download on the headphones. It sounds superb! The CD is no slouch either, and I am happy to have both in my collection.

The 24/96 or the 24/192 from HDTracks?

post 10 dude, the samples are from the 24/192 version.

I'd be curious to see how these stack up to the Jamaican Tuff Gong LP pressings. The bass on those LPs were stunning. I may need to re-needledrop these and compare over the weekend.

Not sure how much better 24/192 buys you in SQ over 24/96.

The 24/96 sounds really great. It keeps playing and playing around here....

MoFi album Exodus sound a little louder (DR 12 for Jamming) than HDTracks version (DR14 for the same song).
It has a stronger and fuller bass, sounds somewhat more round, although not as focused. High res has extended highs and deeper soundstage.

I wonder if you get the extra 2db just by ripping the Redbook of the mofi and saving as 44.1/24? I think I have this album as well, will check it over the weekend.

What albums do you refer to here?

I have many Marley CDs...most of the island albums, except for Burning, catch a fire and Natty dread.

I have the other main albums (Legend included), Songs of Freedom box set and a few pre-Island CD compilations.
