audiphile mini / small speakers - light weight

    Ahoy partisans,

I’m new on audiophile board but read for many weeks now your audiophile forum.
I have been searching for an audiophile “Globetrotter” Mini Speaker System as I move several times per year to different countries => transport of heavy & big-size speakers not possible.

I just bought the Harman Kardon GLA-55 for 800EUR. The sound is impressive for those small speakers.
Can I assume that the sound can’t be better for those small speakers (if yes, I would no refund them ) or would you recommend me even any better audiophile small speakers? Yes, I would be ready to pay more )

    (Mini speakers; max weight = 10kg; max size: 10” / 10” / 10”)

    Many thanks for any ideas!

    Best,
    Marco

Amphion makes a number of very good small speakers. Check out their Ion line:

You might be better off with a fantastic headphone setup. Much more portable, and quality can be fantastic. Of course different soundstage effect and physically you have something on your head... but if I were moving that often I'd just stick with a great Stax setup and a good DAC.

If you're set on speakers, how about those Maggies (mini) that were just written about in another thread? (yes, I admit I have an electrostatic bias)

many thanks for the first ideas.
    - Amphion Ion: I’m scared of those negative reviews which I found for (reviews quite similar: “neither look nor sound like value for money”)
    - Maggie Mini: I read that the setup is complicated / different rooms different sound quality => doesn’t make sense in my case as I move frequently having different room sizes
    - headphones are not an alternative for myself; I travel with girlfriend )

More details to my current set up:
    Source: Macbook Pro
    USB cable: Audioquest Sydney
    DAC: KingRex UD-01 Pro
    Analog Cable: Audioquest Sydney
    Speaker: Harman Kardon GLA-55

=> any recommendations for better audiophile (light weight) mini speakers than my GLA-55 on the market?
(Price max. 3.000 EUR / USD)

I don't know what your Harman Kardon speakers are like, but if you've just dropped 800 euros on them, it would seem to be a good idea to hang onto them I would have thought. One nice system for easily transporting is the CEntrance desktop system described here:

    CEntrance -> AudiophileDesktop

It comes with its own flight case.
    System (i): (MacBook/Decibel; V-Link+AQVOX psu/Marantz CD7; Gyrodek/SME V/Ortofon 2M Blue/Pure Sound P10; Magnum Dynalab FT101A) > Glow Amp One > Tannoy Autograph Minis
System (ii): HRT Music Streamer II+ > MiniWatt N3 > Modified Tandy LX5

    I would look at:
Dynaudio's active speakers such as MC15, BM series, and the Focus 110A.
    Genelec
    Adam
    Focal Solo6 BE

I love genelecs, but they are heavy (the solid aluminium construction is part of the reason they sound great).

many thxs for your ideas. As the time of refund is expired; i m going to keep my Harman Kardon! I m not sure if they re as good as ur recommended genelecs ... but if not at least they win in extravagant design
