VLC question ?
I would like to get an idea of the pros and cons of installing VLC on my Music Mac. It seems to have some benefits in playing FLAC files and music video format conversion. But I picked up the idea from a forgotten somewhere, that it burrowed deep into OSX, like the Norton Utilites of old.
I did a search here, but didn't really find very much useful info even going back quite a few pages.
What do those with some experience with it think ?
Thanks,
Dave

VLC is a straightforward
VLC is a straightforward application so there is no risk in installing it. It is pretty handy to have around especially for video files, it plays just about anything.
I do not like the recent update and would advise to use version 1.1.9 and not the 2.01 update.

Agreed. Pretty innocuous. I also use 1.1.12 and have not upgraded to 2 yet. It plays nearly everything. Some of the recent updates have mangled the transcoding options, so don't trust their quality, but even that works better than just about any other general tool.

I've installed VLC 1.1.12 without problems, but I wasn't able to figure out how to extract audio from a DVD (combined video and audio only content), so I guess I need to buy DVD Audio Extractor to add some of my music videos and/or audio content to my music library. At least, I now have VLC for possible odd format media in the future. I thought I had seen some of the worst UI's in the past, but this one takes the cake

Thanks hoka and bheliker for getting me past my (unwarranted) concerns !Dave
