I'm not sure what an AAC
I'm not sure what an AAC protected file is... when BitPerfect is running (and not disabled) it will always play any supported file iTunes is playing, and mute iTunes.

memory
Yes, BitPerfect always plays from memory. You can control the maximum memory to use. Options range from 64mb to 4096mb.
No matter what you select, BitPerfect will play any length of track and maintain gapless playback. Large buffer sizes are mainly there for those who feel there is an audible degradation caused by CPU/disk/etc... use.

I might have gotten the
I might have gotten the acronym wrong. I mean a DRM protected file downloaded from iTunes a while ago, before they went DRM free.
I was under the impression that Bitperfect, like Amarra, would simply unmute iTunes and let it play. This is not so?

DRM
ICK... DRM!
I have no DRM files, so I wasn't aware of the behaviour. BitPerfect should unmute iTunes if it cannot play the file. At the moment BitPerfect only checks if the file is supported with mime-type, so it sees AAC and thinks "I can play that"... evidently that check needs to be a bit smarter.

I use this to skip them (in a shell-script with embedded osascript):

feedback
Works flawlessly on my 2010 Mac mini with 8 gig memory running 10.6 with Halide Bridge in integer mode. The sound quality is excellent.
I have one suggestion: As long as iTunes is silently tracking playback, why not allow it to play to a remote set of speakers? Then you pretty much have all the advantages of iTunes as a network streamer.
With 10.7 on my 2009 mac mini with 4 gig of memory, it won't work at all with my Nuforce microdac headphone amp (just a bunch of pops). This isn't the only player that does this, so I suspect some other issue is at play (so to speak).

Pops
Try toggling the "Use Maximum Device Buffer Size" option, it might help with the pops.

Plug-ins
Wonderful piece of code! Is there any way you can add host capabilities for AU (or VST, for that matter) plug-ins?

Plug-ins
AU plug-ins are on my todo list, but only after BitPerfect makes it into the app store.

Released!
BitPerfect 0.29 is now available on the Mac App Store, here.
This doesn't mark the end of development, in fact, 0.30 is almost ready to go.
Those of you who've been in touch with me debugging and helping me get to this point will be getting promo codes... so don't rush out and buy it just yet!

Congratulations!
I remember when this was just a gleam in your eye
Seriously, well done - this is a great program for those of us who prefer the iTunes interface - hope it sells well.

Been trying the program on
Been trying the program on and off since 0.24 or so, I find 0.29 to be unbelievable stable. It has now become my main program.
I have a couple of suggestions: A toggle in preferences so that bitperfect releases hog mode, when iTunes isn't playing. That way I can use Plex Media Center without having to log on via screensharing to disable bitperfect first. (or do it via Remote Buddy with an applescript) Or maybe you can do it the opposite way: release hog mode whenever it detects some predefined programs starting up/running.

Another feature I'd like to
Another feature I'd like to see: A Cydia-tweak using gestures or another way of disabling/enable bitperfect through my iphone/ipad. maybe in 2 stages, first show the disabled/enabled status and then a toggle to enable/disable it.
Or a normal app that just toggles the enabled/disabled state and shows the current status and then quits automatically.

Disable/enable toggle?
What about the "Menu" button on the physical remote when iTunes has focus?
Geek that I am, I have an Applescript that sends an ssh command to turn it off/on remotely with a keypress from a keyboard on another computer. But it would be nice to have work natively.

Too Good to be
Tim,
Just purchased your perfect BitPerfect program from the app store. Wow! The program is marvelous in ease of use, SQ, ease of use, SQ. Made a few selections and am now using my iTunes database located on a Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt Raid 5 Array effortlessly in integer mode like sound (even though Lion removed it). All for a price that is beyond reasonable: It's a gift. Having spent nearly $700. for Amarra, which is a fine, fine program, and actually all the others (PM, Fidelia, Decibel Audirvana all fine), I am so grateful for your music player now my default player. Good fortune to you, and thank you for the gift.
Best,
Richard

@wgscott, I use the menu
@wgscott, I use the menu button on the Apple remote to start Plex already. I know I could start and control the iphone via remote buddy, but I like to use something physical when navigating Plex.
With iTunes, i tend to just use the iPhone or iPad, so it would be nice to enable/disable bitperfect remotely from the same device.
Would you mind telling how you set up that applescript?

Disabling BitPerfect
BitPerfect should automatically release the device when it is disabled, when it exits and when iTunes exits.
When I release and acquire exclusive mode more frequently it causes crashes on certain machines.
I'll think on this some more and see if I can come up with a clever way to release hog mode that will serve your purpose.

Protected AAC files
Congratualtions on the AppStore release - great product.
I also have a fair few DRM files from before the iTunes store went DRM free.
These are named "Protected AAC audio file" in the Kind field.
I can confirm that BitPerfect does not unmute iTunes when one of these files is encountered.
Again all the best with the release.

Very cool. I just purchased BitPerfect from the App Store.
My one suggestion is to include an "About BitPerfect" menu option. This would easily enable users to see what version they are using.
