iTunes 10.6.1+ / Remote App 2.3(379) - Remote app stops connecting after a couple hours of idle time.

Well, the subject line says it all. This is most perplexing, and for the life of me, I can't figure out what is happening.

New load of MacOS, patched to current levels.
    (1) Copied in iTunes library, problem persists
    (2) Created new iTunes library, imported all the music/video/apps/books, problem persists

    Fast cure
    (1) Close and reopen iTunes
    (2) Stop and restart home sharing

Mostly notice this overnight, when there is no activity for 2 hours or more. During the day, the problem rarely exhibits, as there is always some activity going on.

No problems, network or otherwise, noted with the Mac when this happens. Remote desktop, file sharing, etc., all working fine. Nothing in the computer systems logs either.

Happens on two different Macs (a Macbook and a Mini) and on a PowerPC MacMini too. Very very odd...

Anyone seen this and have a solution?

    Thanks
    -Paul

Mostly with my ATV2 setup --- if I sleep my ATV2, and then try (after waking) to connect to iTunes the next day, I cannot -- ATV2 just sits there saying "Contacting ...".

As you state - restarting iTunes fixes the issue.

It's not sleeping Bill, and not going into a screensaver either. Not even sleeping the disks.

With my windows machine Paul, I had the same problem with the BonJour service being turned on and off by some other application in the machine. I turned off automatic updates and the problem went away but was never able to isolate the actual conflict.

But I really don't know of you're having the same problem.....my error screen on the iPad or touch was 'Unable to locate iTunes library'. Is that what you get for the IPad? The ATV2 would display 'please turn on home sharing on your computer'. But alas.....no more problems and I sleep my PC with wake on LAN activated through BIOS......it wakes like an adrenaline shot to the heart now!

PS... I remember reading recently on AVS forum somewhere with people updating the firmware on their Airport extremes often. Have you checked your version lately?

    Hi Mayhem-

I think I might have found what is goining on with this, and if I am right, it is involved with home sharing. Will update tomorrow, after I see if the problem s licked.

Yep, it is involved somehow with home sharing, which is very very useful, and actually needed for the ATVs to work. Turn off home sharing and manually connect remote devices, and it seems to behave.

Still trying the other suggestions, have already cycled the router and updated the firmware.
I am however, convinced this has to be an Apple bugaboo. I am going to turn home sharing back on, test that the problem reappears, then try Mayhem's suggestion. This is very time consuming, but I don't quite understand why it has not been caught and squashed before now... Or why it does not show up for more people!

    Paul

P.S. Mayhem- Home Sharing is a Bonjour based service.

Just a side note: Bonjour was developed by Apple, and it's been a part of OS X since 2002. ("Bonjour" was originally called "Rendezvous.") The Windows version was released in 2010.

Drat and drat and double drat... this has to be a Home Sharing problem- there is nothing else that this can be, but what exactly is causing it I have not had any luck in determining. Other, than it is a nasty bug in iTunes. The problem is, if it is such a nasty bug, why isn't everyone experiencing the same thing?

Just to let you guys know, turning off home sharing and connecting to the library the old fashioned way, with Remote.app and a generated code is utterly reliable. Using Home Sharing to access the library, from Remote.App or an ATV2 or ATV3 works perfectly - until it doesn't. Usually after about 2 hours of idle time.

The only possible thing left is the external disk(s) I am using. I plan to copy the library over to a couple USB (vice firewire) disks tomorrow and give it a try. But I doubt it, because the same problem is reported all over the web.

This is really annoying, as iTunes has always been my number one backup system, the fallback as well. I could of course, just run LMS server on the Mac with iTunes, but it offends me to have to do that. I really want iTunes to work perfectly, as it always has before.

Actually, iTunes does work perfectly - it's the remote Home Sharing / Bonjour code that is acting up.

I've experienced something similar -- not sure if it's related or not. Using Pure Music with iTunes and with Home Sharing enabled (I think), I've seen the Remore app become unresponsive after an hour or two. Frankly, I never made the connection with Home Sharing before -- I assumed it was either a PM bug or my misconfiguration of PM for use with Remote.

I don't usually use either the Remote app or Home Sharing, so this hasn't been a big issue for me, but I'll see if I can get this to happen again.

Paul, have you looked on the iTunes forum at Apple.com to see if others have reported similar problems?

I thought I read somewhere that there's an option to prioritize BonJour services somewhere.......a simple box to check? MacRumors Forum maybe?

    I found this:

Troubleshooting Apple TV not recognized in iTunes

Not sure it's useful, except maybe for the part about configuring the firewall (?).
