Not sure if this thread exists but I thought it would be great to list opinions on great 24/96 Alblum Downloads where they are clearly better than their CD equivalent Also, would be interesting where others view the 24/192 version is a clear improvement over its 24/96 equivalent since HD Tracks has a choice on many Albums.

For me,

24/96 Favorites:

Jason Mraz - LOVE
Steely Dan - Gaucho
Elton John - Madman Across the Water
Livingston Taylor - (Think its called Ink)

I ask the 24/192 question also as I have The Eagles - Hotel California and it doesnt impress me.

Thanks,

One of the fantastic things about purchasing the AIX DVD-A discs over the direct downloads is you get both the "ambience" and "stage" mix on the disc. Both these are also available on the itrax download site, but as separate downloads.

But when you go to use audioextractor to backup both these fabulous AIX mixes that you have purchased on the DVD-A, only one mix seems to be "available" for backup. And which one is it? Any clues how to get both and to find out which is which (other than by a blind listen!)

Cheers
(P.S AIX is awesome! )

I am being forced to conclude that in many - perhaps most - specific instances, the answer is no. Actually, the answer may be more like "hell no!"

I've got quite a few Hi-res downloads from HDTracks, BIS, and other places, and honestly? Most of them are not any better than the CD versions, and in some cases, not as good as the iTunes 256k versions.

Add to that, a great deal of the music available in HiRes, especially new music, is not from popular artists or in the case of a lot of classical music, poorly recorded.

A few - a very few - hi-res downloads are breathtakingly wonderful and easily exceed the quality of the CD versions

What do you guys think?

I have all the CD's ripped, but only groove to them occasionally these days. My question: has anybody "in the know" (Synthfreak?) listened to their 24 bit stuff? If so, are there real sonic benefits? After all, it's not going to reveal any nuances of acoustic guitar or soulful singing. :-)

No real content above 22kHz. Some dither noise before the 40kHz filter. If this is the same source that HDtrack offers I understand why they label it 24/44.1 (and not something higher).

BTW: It looks like all Depeche Mode SACD:s are up-sampled from a 44.1kHz source tape. There should be higher bitrate tapes somewhere in the vaults as for surethese old Depeche records probably where originally mastered to Analogue Tape. During the remastering in 2006 I bet the multitrack tapes where transferred / AD converted to 44.1kHz for some reason, then mixed and released.
