In their new "Guide to Affordable Audio", TAS reviews Audirvana (without revealing which version specifically). Overall the review is very positive, although I was a bit surprised by the following quote:

"Sonically I found Audirvana Plus to be equalto both Amarra and Pure Music. In matched-level A/B listening sessions of Red Book 44.1/16files, the differences among the three programswere minor and not reliably attributable solelyto software. On higher-resolution files I quicklydeveloped a preference for Audirvana Plus dueto its ergonomic ease, but once more sonicdifferences were harder to reliably identify. The only thing that was clear was that all threeprograms are substantially more transparentthan iTunes."

Further down in the article, interestingly enough TAS claims you can rip SACDs with an external blue ray drive. I'd be interested to see how they achieve that, by the way.

I've asked this before can't seem to get an answer so here it goes again. Is there any way to put MC17 on a network server so that I can just always just go to my iphone/ipad jremote and play it???

I (well actually a buddy) built a full blown Supermicro 22TB network server and want to take the other computer out of the loop so that I don't have to turn the computer on, log in, open JRiver, etc. I want to take that part out and just go to the jremote whenever I want and hit play.

OR

Do I need a squeezebox or something like that? I really want the Simaudio MIND but can't afford it right now so just want to be able to run MC17 for the time being without the whole starting up the computer junk.

Thanks

Is XLD a good choice for this? It feels a little strange to have to hit "Transcode" when done... it appears that it is recopying all the AIFF file data. Maybe that's what other metadata editors do anyway, I haven't tried Metadatics for instance.

Also, can changing a genre to something of my own invention (eg, "Jazz" to "Lounge Jazz") cause me any grief down the road? I'm just getting into computer audio, and don't know what sorts of hardware/software I may eventually end up using. Right now I've only tried iTunes, but can see going to an UPnP streamer/NAS system like a Naim plus a Synology. Also will likely try the new JRMC for Mac.

I finally got a PS3 and have successfully produced some ISO files then extracted them to DSF files using Ted's excellent instructions and associated software.

I see on the JRiver wiki that the Windows version of JRiver should play SACD files but no reference to the MAC version of JRiver.

I have tried to play by clicking the ISO files in JRiver but no luck. Ditto for clicking on the DSF files.

I am probably missing something here, maybe JRiver Mac doesn't even play these files but I was hoping that someone could give me some suggestions about where to go from here.

Thanks to Ted and all for the fine work in producing the PS3 software!

Hi -- I am demoing (or trying to) the Mytek Stereo 192 DSD dac using A+ software. Previously, I used A+ with the Lynx Hilo, and playback was smooth, without glitches. With the Mytek, files are hanging up in mid-playback, both with regular old 44.1 files and DSD. I have v1.5 of A+ and am on v1.7.1 on the Mytek. Anybody have a clue as to what is going on and how to fix? Thanks. --David

I know of a couple of threads on this on AVS etc, but has anybody found a good way to get say 5.1 Flac files (from say DVDaudioextractor) merged into the one gapless track with a CUE sheet compatible for the Oppo?

I can't get the foobar option working.

Is there any other way? I'm even thinking converting 5.1 Flac or wave -> 5.1 DSD (because DSDmerge works ) but I don't really want to do this on principle. And don't know of a 5.1 version of Audiogate etc.

Thoughts on what to do?

Eye candy. Reminders. Sensuality. Virtual reality.

So, when I realized that a couple of tracks were missing artwork, I wondered how many more were in that shape.

Then I realized that an iTunes smart playlist would find all of them, since one of the possible filter parameters is "Album Artwork" set either as true or false.

So I made a new smart playlist with that filter, set it to false, found all the tracks that were incomplete, and fixed them in minutes.

Nice.

Windows 8 Audio Optimization Script

Hello,

Hello,

I have been looking for a simple way to optimize a Windows 8 computer for audio use. We manufacture DACs and it is important that we can optimize our dealers and customers computers quickly and easily.

A few months ago I saw the script that "John Doe" wrote and thought that was a great idea because it is a really easy way to automate Windows 8 for audio use.

Anything that we can do to make it simpler and sound better is a good thing for the industry and I think this would be of interest to a lot of other computer audiophiles out there.

My current script for Windows 8 disables around 250 services & drivers. I have put a lot of work into finding the correct services/drivers to shut down. When I say "correct" I mean ones that improve sound quality and of course do not cause a BSOD.

It would be helpful to have others take a look at what I have done, try it out and offer suggestions.
The script is leaning a bit towards ease of use than "absolutely best sound quality possible".

Some of my requirements are:

· Ethernet connection for connection to LAN and wifi (iPad use and putting Music Drive on network)
· Ability to use JRiver
· Ability to use third part playback software such as JPLAY

The script has 4 options that you have to answer Yes or No to:

1) Do you want to disable Remote desktop? If you use some type of remote desktop or VPN to control your computer answer no.
2) Does your computer use an Intel processor? If you answer yes the script will shut down some unnecessary AMD processes.
3) Does your computer use an IDE/ATA HDD or SSD interface? Generally the answer is no, but, some of the secondary PCIe SSDs in laptops are using this interface.
4) Do you wish to use WASAPI for audio playback? If you use or want to be able to use WASAPI answer yes.

The script disables wifi on the computer. It does allow Ethernet connection and LAN access. It also allows access to a NAS. I find that connecting my computer to a wifi router with an Ethernet cable and using the wifi on the router is more robust and sounds better.

This script is intended for people that use their computer just for audio use! If you want to do email, Office, surf the net, etc do not use this script! This script is for making what I call an "audio computer", this is used just for audio and nothing else.

All Power Options are optimized: Power Scheme = high performance, USB Selective Settings disabled, Desktop background setting slide show paused, Disable PCI Express Link State Power, CPU state set to 100 percent – no CPU throttling, Intel graphics set to maximum battery life, passive system cooling. I also set the display to turn off after 1 minute, set hard disk to never turn off, computer to never go to sleep and if using laptop the laptop lid closed keeps the computer on.

You can run the script from a USB stick or anywhere you want. You must right click the file and "run as administrator". Once you run this script the changes are permanent. Meaning they will remain even after rebooting your computer. To get back to your original settings use my second script which returns all settings that were modified back to Windows 8 standard except for the Power Scheme settings.

You can view and modify the script by opening it in Notepad.

Computers do not have all the same services so I have tried to concentrate on the basic services/drivers that are common to Windows 8 machines.

I am in the HiFi business but I want to state that I will never charge for this and it will be a free download on our website.

As I hope you would understand you use this script at completely your own risk! I would recommend making a system image of your drive, a restore point, a copy of your Registry (on a USB stick) and to create a bootable Windows 8 DVD Repair Disk before you run the script. You must reboot your machine after making a restore point and before running the script.

Then script has been over on the JPLAY forum for a couple months now and if you want you can read about it over there.

You can download V2.3 of the script here:

CAD Windows 8 Optimization Script V2.3

You can download V2.3 of the Windows 8 Return to Original Settings here:

Some things sound too good to be true, but it is true.

With help from a fellow computer audio friend, I found a killer app that allows any playback software to stream DoP to a DSD DAC that supports DoP.

Since Friday, with an open sourced encoder, I have been playing DSD files encapsulated within FLAC files with my Squeezebox Touch outputting to a dCS.

The Squeezebox thinks it is outputting 176.4 PCM files;

The dCS reads the encapsulated stream as DoP streams and happy unpack it and play it as DSD files.

This dream software was discovered by a clever friend. I asked aloud that it would be so nice if the Squeezebox Touch could output DoP streams. He went ahead and did a 10 minute research and came up with below software.

It is a Foobar plugin so you will need Foobar 2000 to run it.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4jZ...ByNUdjdDg/edit

The software is quite easy to run. Even a Windows audio dummy like me was able to get it working.

You will need DSD files (DSF,DFF or ISO), outputs will be FLAC files which you can tag, and/or convert to other formats like AIFF or ALAC files. So yes even iTunes can play DSD files without Pure Music or Audirvana.

Try it, you will be pleasantly surprised.
