Boy finding these in the UK is a pain. The cable that comes with the Streacom case (I would not recommend these by the way) only fits by stretching the cable diagonally across the case which doesn't appeal to my "neat and tidy cabling" ethos. I've found an extension cable but of course when combined with the original cable it's too long. I'm wondering whether it isn't too hard to simply construct one to the right length but I am not familiar with the connections they use and it wouldn't appear as though the ones on the Streacom supplied cable are re-usable (i.e. can be removed and placed on a longer wire). Any guidance with regards to making a longer cable (or a source of longer cables, circa 50cm, in the UK) would be appreciated.

iFi Gemini Cable Comment Thread

I know people are finally starting to receive the iFi Gemini dual head usb cable. Rather than burying Gemini comments in the iFi iUSB thread, I thought we should start a separate comment thread for the Gemini.

I received my Gemini today. Construction is solid and aluminum alloy connectors are utilized. The cable also features 3 separate custom designed metal oxide ceramic RF silencers. Two are fixed at each end of the cable. The third is located inbetween the two fixed silencers and is designed to slide in either direction. The adjustable silencer is designed to be tuned to match your particular system through experimentation.

I am burning in my Gemini now.

Two preliminary comments:

1. I inserted the Gemini in the appropriate output side of the iFi iUSB, connecting to my usb/spdif converter, and inserted my KingRex uArt dual head usb cable from my computer to the input end of the iUSB. With this configuration, while playing music, I encountered very noticeable "popping" noises, similar to vinyl static associated with vinyl playback, but even more pronounced. So much for my "dual head usb cable at both ends of the iUSB" test.

2. I then replaced the KingRex with my current favorite usb cable, the Mapleshade Clearlink Plus. The popping noise stopped, and all is working fine.

I will add further comments regarding sound quality in later posts (including comparisons with the iUSB in the system and out of the system).

Other Gemini users- please feel free to add your comments to this thread.

Cheers

Hello,

I'm looking for an excellent USB -> AES/EBU converter to use with Jplay (2 PC's), very important.
I've looked at the SotM Package (converter + superclock + battery PSU) and it cost around 1500 Euros.
For the same price there's Bel Canto Ref Link, only 1 box, better in my mind than the SotM "stack".
There are other cheaper solutions, V Link 192, Stello U3 and others.

So my question, in the range of say 1500 Euros what is the best product to buy ?

Thank you for your feedback

My wife, who prefers to remain anonymous (so we will just call her Karla Marx), asked me to post this question. She was deploying a common marital communication device known as bitter sarcasm, which seems to have taken the place of sex after age 50. Anyhoo, she was using some sort of rag to re-arrange the dust particles in the living room, and cheerfully suggested she move the speakers so as to better cleanse them of the remains of the day (actually about 300 days since the last particulate removal -- we seem to have a standoff). I decided for once not to take the bait (having been properly fed for a change).

She asked me to post a poll whether people permit their house cleaners (paid or otherwise) to touch their audio equipment. She also cheerfully suggested that this might be done without their knowledge and in their absence, and that they would never detect the 5mm displacement by ear, implicitly ridiculing my careful measurement and placement, which she in turn views as a lame excuse for the purchase of a laser measuring device, which we could no longer live without and which has changed our life, immeasurably, for the better, since its hasty acquisition.

OK, let's go to the polls!

How to Preserve Sound Quality at Low Volume Listening Levels?

As a primarily desktop near-field listener, I'm very interested in all the factors at play in being able to access high quality sound at low...

As a primarily desktop near-field listener, I'm very interested in all the factors at play in being able to access high quality sound at low listening levels, at least as much as this is possible in a near-field desktop setting. I have read that the quality of volume control at low levels is one important factor. Some even say that it is best to have an analog volume control for this. I've also read various things about amps and speakers and their contribution to high quality low level listening. Some say that powerful solid state amps are less likely to sound good at low volume.

I would also be happy to receive any equipment recommendations or suggestions for combinations of components that would work well. I'm open to replacing anything in my system. Keep in mind that desktop placement does limit speaker options. In my listening space it is very difficult to set up stands.

I'm looking for excellent overall sound quality that includes low level listening.

Thanks in advance.
