Sending native files to DAC

Hi All

I am new to Computer Audio and would like some advise on sending files to a DAC. Please forgive me if I am not uo to speed with the computer jargon and use the incorrect words.

I have a Dell notebook with Vista Ultimate software and I am using the Windows Media Player as the player.
I have the notebook connected to the the DAC (Cambridge Audio 840C) via a Bel Canto USB link. It seems that the WMP does not send the native file but converts the file to whatever resolution (eg. 24/96) is set in the sound devise. Is there a way to send the native file to the DAC without the computer doing anything to the file.

Once again I apologies for my ignorance on these matters and will appreciate advise on the aforementioned.
Regards
M

Hmm ...

Eloise, sorry to interfere a little, but this this is not going to help M.
Besides, please notice the second agenda of Benchmark would suggest to just upsample everything (to 24 bits that is anyway), which is the opposite of what is wanted here (because Benchmarks won't play otherwise).

I must honestly say that I don't have better answers myself than using or ASIO, or another player using WASAPI (could be Foobar with the WASAPI plugin).

Peter

PS: The one in my signature also does it (how to avoid telling that :-))
