Has anybody done this? I'm thinking of picking up a broken (just the disk) iPod ($20) & replacing the disk with a compact flash card & while in there tapping into the I2S traces that go to the on-board DAC but re-routing them to a Sabre DAC. All this in one box. As this would be solid state storage, outputting I2S, & running off batteries, with a very usable interface, it might make a very nice project with high quality sound? This should easily beat the Wadia itransport for sound!
Anybody gone down this path before?
I know of this site http://www.ualberta.ca/~jple/diyMod/index.html which is more about taking analog out of the iPod
I saw this thread but don't think anybody built it http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f6/diy-ipod-digital-out-288449/
