Berkeley Alpha dac and Weiss Minerva

Recommended Posts

Hi Chris,

Are you planning on doing a full review on the Berkeley? I am very curious about these two.

I read a couple rave reviews on the Minerva and was ready to try one until I read about your preference for Berkeley.

Could you please share more details on the comparison? I understand that you like Berkeley better.

I am more inclined to go with Weiss Minerva for the simpler setup if the sonic quality is pretty close.

I am think about Imac > Firewire > Weiss Minerva.

I understand I would need a Mac Pro/ PC desktop with a Lynx Card > AES > Berkeley.

Any helps would be appreciated. I am sure i am not the only one inquiring about this.

Hi Kent - Welcome to Computer Audiophile. I am planning a complete review of the Alpha DAC from Berkeley Audio Design.

If you're planning on an iMac based system there is nothing better right now than the Minerva in my opinion. It is about half the width of a traditional component and would probably fit the look of an iMac based system. The big thing of course if the FireWire input on the Minerva that allows full 24/192 resolution.

The Alpha DAC has a different feature set that you may or may not be looking for. Built-in volume control, HDCD indicator, no USB or FireWire etc...

Both are great sounding DACs.

Hi Chris,

Could you please elaborate on the sound differences? I have a full tube system which require a fairly neutral sounding dac. Resolution, dynamic, vocal.....etc.

I do understand that the Minerva is more convinience than Berkeley as it is as plug and play as it can get. I am willing to put up with the Berkeley if its sound suit my need.

Thanks.
