Labarum
This board software drives me mad. I don't find it particularly flexible or easy to use, but then I am sold on vBulletin, and can use that in my sleep. And I apologise for posting this comment here - I can't find anywhere more appropriate. The Computer Audiophile
Hi Brian - Thanks for the feedback. I chose Drupal and it's integrated forums for many reasons which there is no need to cover here and put everyone to sleep. I'm not a fan of VBulletin because it is a closed architecture and looks awful in my opinion. Upgrades can also be a nightmare with vBulletin. If you have suggestions to make this site better please let me know. Drupal is open source and almost anything can be done. Thanks Brian! machinehead
I don't know the names of the various forum softwares, but I really like this one compared to most of the others I have used. My 2 cents. Jeff \"It would be a mistake to demonize any particular philosophy. To do so forces people into entrenched positions and encourages the adoption of unhelpful defensive reactions, thus missing the opportunity for constructive dialog\"[br] - Martin Colloms - stereophile.com Link to comment
Labarum
The need to give each post a title destroys the unity of threads and confuses my little brain. I found that, on starting a thread I retained the right to edit the first post (the root), but that I cannot edit any subsequent contribution I might make to the thread. Does the software allow multi branching? Some might like that, but it only serves to confuse a simple mind like mine that thinks in straight lines! I can't easily control my subscription preferences as easily as in vBulletin - the buttons are hidden goodness knows where rather than than being available at the top of each thread. I appreciate you will probably find at least as may opinions as members. Edit: Now perversely this post I can edit, yet earlier today I could not edit a post to correct a spelling mistake. Second edit: And I still can't edit my post "Practically, what is theoretically best may not yet be the best " in the AVI thread I initiated) Brian Squeezebox Classic - Beresford Caiman-Gator DAC - Quad 520f with Dada refresh - Quart 980s German Tower Loudspeakers. The Computer Audiophile
Hi Brian - Thanks for the specifics and recognizing there are as many opinions as members. Titling a post is done automatically if you leave the space empty. I can remove the whole thing, but left it there as an option. I will look into the edit rights etc... Subscriptions have some controls in the user account area. Thanks Brian! Founder of Audiophile Style | My Audio Systems Link to comment
Labarum
I have left the title box empty as an experiment. Perhaps there should be a note next to the box that it should be left empty to retain the thread title. Edit But It didn't work as you suggest. The software takes the opening words of the post as a new title! Brian Squeezebox Classic - Beresford Caiman-Gator DAC - Quad 520f with Dada refresh - Quart 980s German Tower Loudspeakers. Labarum
Perhaps there should be two more sections, one for comments on board mechanics, the other an "off Topic" chat section. The Computer Audiophile
Hi Brian - I believe I fixed the auto-subscription settings so users can now adjust their own settings. In the user account settings click on Subscriptions then Settings. Look for the following settings. Founder of Audiophile Style | My Audio Systems Link to comment
The Computer Audiophile
"But It didn't work as you suggest. The software takes the opening words of the post as a new title!" I thought I was straight forward when I said in my previous post: "Titling a post is done automatically if you leave the space empty." I don't really see a need to repeat the title of the topic over and over though. Oh well. Founder of Audiophile Style | My Audio Systems Link to comment
Labarum
Nor do I, but this board software seems to require a title for each post, and I guess it is necessary if multi-branching is allowed. But I may be completely wrong, because this software confuses me so completely. Edit And again, in the absence of my input the board inserts a title. Edit 2 I now have pref set to "Collapsed" and "Threaded" - it makes it easier to see how the discussion is being routed, but I would prefer only the linear option - no branching. Labarum
I see the option now "Subscribe to this page" at the bottom of the original post. I also see a link to an unrelated thread about Foobar, and I don't understand what that is offered. Labarum
It's the threading that adds the complexity. So I think I have worked it out. If I "Add a new comment" it is attached to an individual post. This one I have added to my initial post, so it should be so threaded to the root. vBulletin, and most other forum softwares I have used generate a linear discussion. I must say I prefer that with a passion. It holds the discussion topic together: everyone is contributing to one continuously developing conversation which is displayed without branches. If, in vBulletin, I want to comment on another individuals post, or just part of it, I use the "quote" function: I quote the whole previous post (or just a few words of it) and add my observation. That, to me, seems a much tidier way to manage the conversation and display the data. Just my "two penneth": I now understand what the software is doing, but believe it to be hindering rather than helping the discussion. Edit 1. Yes, this post is in the top level. 2. The "Subject" is taken from the first few words of the post, not from the parent; and each individual post must have a Subject Title because of the multi-branching threads. 3. Aaaaaah! TheRocker
Brian, just select 'Flat List - Expanded' at the bottom of the page, and you will see all the posts in chronological order (or reverse if you prefer), disregarding threads. I think this is what you want? Also, to quote previous posts, use the cite tags and copy & paste. Peter Link to comment
Labarum
Also, to quote previous posts, use the cite tags and copy & paste. So I have to type in the escape code {cite} {/cite}, and all it does is italicise! Still drives me absolutely mad! But Flat is better, now I know what crazy threading is going on underneath.
