Occasional problems with ripping CDs

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am experiencing occasional problems when ripping CDs as follows:

1. Occasionally, for some reason, a CD will just not be accepted by my Macbook - it either spends ages trying to start it up, or just spits it out. Funnily enough, these CDs play fine on a standard CDP.

2. Very occasionally, the Mac will spend ages ripping a CD or track and then the end product is distorted or has breaks/jumps. I am using error correction.

Does anyone else have similar problems?

It can cut both ways - some CDs that skip on my CDP rip perfectly to my Mac!

Hi Phil - This is one of those things that's pretty annoying and hard to explain.

This happens to everyone now and then. I have some CDs that will not work in my MacBook Pro, but work just great in my MacBook. The discs can be new and fresh out of the package!

I've experienced this exact same thing when the CD is pretty scratched. There are things you can do to work around the problem, but they are annoying themselves. For example using EAC on a PC you can use modes that will literally take a whole day to rip one CD and the results can be pretty good. This can also be very hard on the optical drive. For the limited number of badly scratched CDs that I have problems ripping I usually just pick up a used copy on eBay or Amazon and call it a day.

Many people have the same problems you've described. Fortunately with computer based audio you have options. With a traditional system either it plays or it doesn't and there's nothing you can do.

Chris,

Thanks for your reply. Funnily enough, the odd CD that has trouble ripping always looks fine. I did recently order a CD from the new and used section of Amazon for 1p plus P&P. The seller then got back to me to say she was sending it me totally free since it was very scratched. I gratefully accepted and it imported PERFECTLY to my Mac.

I agree Chris that the easiest way to get round this is just grab another copy from ebay or wherever.
