• Objective And Subjective - The First Three Led Zeppelin Albums At 24 bit / 96 kHz

Many music aficionados and hard core fans have been waiting a long time for a taste of Led Zeppelin in high resolution. The time has finally come. Tuesday June 03, 2014 marked the release of Led Zeppelin I, II, and III remastered at 24 bit / 96 kHz resolution plus a little extra bonus material included with the Deluxe Editions of each album. According to HDtracks, "The new remasters were created from 192 kHz/24 bit digital transfers of the original analogue tapes. The catalogue is being remastered now to take advantage of the significant advances in mastering technology that have occurred since 1991." Much of this catalog has been released several times over the years, but the dynamic range compression of so many of the releases has completely killed the sound quality. My favorite Led Zeppelin releases, in terms of sound quality, are the original Compact Disc masters with very nice high dynamic range. I used these releases as my reference when listening to the new 24/96 high resolution releases. Based on several hours of listening, I like the new high resolution masters as much or better than the original CD masters and certainly more than other previous versions of the first three Led Zeppelin albums. Sure the dynamic range of the original CD releases is greater than these new releases, but higher DR doesn't equate to better sound. There are many things that go into mastering an album. If it was all about DR nobody would have to listen to an album. We could purchase music based on numbers. Given that the original CD releases are out of print, I don't believe there's a better version than the 24/96 remasters available today. I've been listening to the first three albums for the last six hours in high resolution. I flip back to the original CD every so often just for a reality check to make sure I'm not hearing what I want and fooling myself. Every time I listen to the older versions I feel a need to switch back to the new high resolution material. It isn't an accident that I've gravitated to the new 24/96 remasters. I simply like the sound better than any other version of Led Zeppelin I, II and III I've ever heard. Period.

Below is the objective data for the new 24/96 remasters of Led Zeppelin I, II, and III in addition to the same data for the original CD releases of the same albums. Comparing the data won't let the reader know which version sounds better on a given audio system. If anything this objective data just ensures nothing has gone terribly wrong in the remastering process and nobody is being sold an ultra low resolution version converted to "faux fidelity" high resolution.

      Hello,
First, not too much energy above 20kHz, but it was recorded in that time where high resolution was not available. Second, to me it is just good remaster of the original files, but not so much high resolution recording of course.

Generally agree with Chris - good sounding remasters, probably the best one (I don't have them all). The volume compression isn't bothersome, except in a few places. Worth it for LZ fans.

Yes ... you say the 24/96 versions sound better ... but perhaps that is the mastering rather than 24 bit?

I'm not sure as I haven't heard any of the Japanese CDs. Hopefully someone who has listened to both the CDs and the new high resolution versions can comment.

Probably in the minority here, but to me the Japanese SHM-CDs sound best. More involving, and even demanding of attention, than the the hi-res, which somehow just sound lifeless, sometimes even dull (and fatiguing). Where's the warmth and the subtle harmonics? Maybe my expectations were elevated.

Thanks for the opinion. I wonder what version sounds closest to the artist's intentions. I know Jimmy Page was heavily involved with the new high resolution remasters. Was he involved in the SHM-CDs? It doesn't matter either way really, it's what one likes that counts.

I think the SHM-CDs used the same digital files as the American CDs. The difference is some special polycarbonate used to make the discs. Not sure how that makes a big difference. But my buddy has a couple of them and they do sound good.

I never had the original CD's but felt some of the later versions I owned or heard suffered terribly making them almost unlistenable for me.

I have both the Japanese versions and the new 24/96 releases and they are both very good. I found that the Japanese CD's seem to focus more on the vocals, bringing them out of the mix more than the new 24/96 versions. Bass is lower and deeper on the 24/96 and also the recording seems more spatial overall. I still can't decide which one I like best as I go back-and-forth I hear things I like better in each version. If you don't have or want to invest in the Japanese sets I don't think most people would be disappointed in the 24/96 versions of these first three Zep albums, especially when compared to earlier single CD releases.

I'm surprised this is even debatable? 25 year old transfers done with 25 year old converters vs. Brand new high resolution files done with SOTA modern converters by Jimmy Page & Co.

because we've experienced some modern remasters that weren't improvements or even weren't as good.

Yeah but this is different. These weren't shitty transfers or upsamples done by anonymous record company employees. Jimmy Page has to know what the master tapes sound like and I'm sure he had some good advice from engineers he worked with on this project. Too much at stake to do a lousy job.

And The Immigrant Song is till quite compressed, but it sure rocks when you play it LOUD!
