• Announcing CA Music Reviews!

Since high resolution downloads began consumers have been clamoring for more information about each release. Audiophiles care about much more than bit depth and sample rate of their favorite albums. Important details such as mastering engineer, recording engineer, and the provenance of each download can be difficult to find. In addition to the facts, finding people's opinions and comparisons about musical performances and sound quality can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Wouldn't it be nice if we all had a single location to read and write reviews of our favorite, and not so favorite, music? That's what the new CA Music Reviews section is all about. CA Music Reviews isn't limited to high resolution or downloads only, but the greatest need right now is for more information about high resolution downloads. The Music Reviews section of CA is designed to be a win-win for everyone from the consumer to the online retailer to the artist. Credit should be given where credit is due. On the flip side, when readers discover a mistake has been made preparing a file for high resolution release everyone should have this information. In the long run the quality of the products should increase when people know it will be reviewed subjectively and possibly analyzed objectively in the Music Reviews section of CA.

Today's launch of CA Music Reviews is version 0.9 Beta. The concept is here to stay and the reviews are here to stay, but small tweaks will be made and bugs, if any, will be worked out during this Beta period. All music reviews are encouraged even if the writer doesn't have all the information about an album. Something is better than nothing. Don't want to post graphs? No problem-o. Post what you have or what you want. Others can help fill in the details by leaving comments.

The following forum thread should be used for reader feedback and bug reports - > CA Music Reviews | User Feedback and Bug Reports

Accessing the Music Reviews is as simple as clicking the link at the top of any page.

Finding music reviews can be done by browsing, searching, or using the advanced search & filter function as seen below.

To start writing a review click the Add Review button from the Music Reviews main page.

Once a review is published a link appears on the user's profile page.

      Hello there

Thanks Chris for all the hard work. Have had a quick look at the moment and it looks good and very easy on the eye. Like the way you have added cover art and the video. Can see this being a great resources.

One problem, it makes me want to go out a buy a Kind of Blue. God help my wallet.

      Cheers Frank

Are French-written reviews acceptable to the community?

Certainly. We all have easy access to translation apps and the ratings numbers are universal.

Suggestion. Create sub categories under Music Reviews with different genres, like Classical, Jazz, etc. It will help users to read only the ones they are interested w/o having to scroll through all available reviews.

Chris - would you consider adding a field/rating for the metadata supplied with the download? You can't improve what you can't measure! Maybe there's some small influence we can have in this department.

I've seen you comment on it in the past, and it drives me nuts also.

The worst example I've experienced is Starker's Bach Cello Sonatas from Mercury. The tracks - about 40 for this album - were completely out of order and it shows up as 2 albums. To HD Tracks credit, they gave me a refund when I complained and I appreciate they don't supply the metadata. I've also downloaded music directly from labels that didn't come with cover art. Nonesuch is my prime offender in this category. I love their selection of music, the recording quality is generally fantastic, and their CD quality FLAC pricing is very good. Though, I haven't seen any high res downloads from them yet.

Hi Matt - I like the idea but can't figure out the practicality of implementing it. A check box for good metadata, a check box for some metadata, a check box for no metadata, etc... Some will have all metadata but it will have a couple wrong items, etc...

Also, the fields are more for searchability than anything. Items like sample rate are easy to search for but the metadata one would be a bit weird. I think the best route to go for metadata is to comment about it in the review, maybe make it an item on the Pros/Cons list.

We will have an influence on all this stuff. I guarantee it. People are already taking notice :~)

      Chris - some quick feedback.

Today when posting a review I previewed the review before publishing it. I noticed that none of the "Details" - engineering etc, were shown on the preview page although I had filled them out. I published the review and mysteriously all of the details info that I filed out were not shown. After going back and editing the review and filling them out again, they did appear after I clicked the edit review button at the bottom. Odd.

      Thanks George!

I have a list of issues like this so I can work with the developer to fix them.

Thanks Chris. One more peculiarity - at your leisure take a look at the author rating for me. Although I have the rating as a 5 it does not show any author stars when published.
