Back-up options

Recommended Posts

Hi Chris,I have ripped my Cd's to the Mac mini.I am wanting to have a back-up for among the usual reasons,I could sell off the Cd's.I think I am not needing an external HD for storage and playing just now.I think I just need a back-up.I think thats my question. What should I do now in your opinion? Thanks,Bob

Hey Bob - I'm not a fan of ripping CDs and selling them for a few reasons. I'll leave that for another day.

You have several options for backup. The easiest way is to get an external hard drive and use Time Machine which is built into OS X. TM automatically runs and backs up everything on your Mini. When you add music there is nothing you need to do to insure it gets backed up. This requires the external drive to be connected at all times if you want the backup to work.

The other option is to connect an external drive whenever you want to back things up. Then you can run my automator script to copy the new music since the last backup. Or, you can manually copy everything over to the external drive.

There are other options as well. Let me know what path your leaning toward?

Just thinking...I have room by the Mac so I can leave it connected always as you say.How long does it take to manually copy? Why does it have to be always connected? Can't one just have it sit somewhere on a shelf and connect when needed? Thanks,Bob

Hey Bob - The hard drive brands I use exclusively are Seagate and Hitachi. This certainly doesn't mean the others are bad just that my experience with hard drives has been very good with Seagate and Hitachi.

Since all of your music is contained on the Mini you shouldn't the biggest one available. In order to provide room for the Time Machine backups and because they are not that expensive, I would look for a 750 GB USB drive. Smaller drives will certainly works just as good, but 750 will give you a nice buffer and if you ever want to store your music on the external drive you can turn this one inter you music drive easily.

Here is a pretty good deal http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148314

If you want to scale down to 500 GB this one is even cheaper http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148235

Newegg is a great place to purchase computer hardware. I use them all the time.

Remember to pick up the Airport Extreme router as well :-)

Let me know what you're thinking and we'll come up with a final config.
