-or known as the ‘Summer Holiday’ project. Credit mainly goes to Richard Dale for the build instructions that I simply followed to get ‘bit-perfect’ audio playback with a USB DAC. We shared the view that embedded systems like this are adequate, even for high-end setups. Since I have no previous experience of programming or understanding Linux, I’ll admit it was a big learning curve, and without Richard’s support I would have been hopelessly lost on many occasions.
Here's now the promised update with 16-bit TPDF dither. This is also good for comparing how much dither vs truncation makes difference in real world.
CS4328 (1-bit 64x oversampling delta-sigma)
Updated numbers THD=0.002%, IMD=0.003%.
1 kHz sine:
19 + 20 kHz sine:
DF1700 + PCM1700 (18-bit 8x oversampling R2R ladder)
Is there any settings posted here that everyone agree to have a positive effect? or does everyone have a different opinion?

I haven't posted in awhile due to being a new father. But couldn't resist sharing my budget, wife-approved setup for my little two month old. It includes a Tivoli Audio Model One (150$), iPod (used 150$), and dock (used 10$). I mostly leave the local classical music station going (no commercials), but occasionally pump through some Pandora or mp3. At night, I put on some pink noise for her.

I took a pair of my old early 90's DACs from the storage and fed bunch of measurements through both. Source for both was MuFi V-Link192 at 44.1k output. As result of doing this at midnight I forgot to change the output to 16-bit, so you may see some truncation quantization effects too... Both of the DACs claim 18-bit resolution.
1) Crystal Semiconductor CS4328 64x oversampling 1-bit DAC chip with 8x interpolation and fifth-order modulator. IOW, so it's
So first of all, some photos. Doesn't look like much of anything at this point - really needs a chassis. But it sure sounds nice, even before any rewiring, cap rolling, and vibration control.
As I mentioned in other blog posts and comments, this DAC allows input at 8x rates (352.8/384), allowing the user to bypass the DAC chip's

Experiments have shown that people can't tell plonk from grand cru. Now one US winemaker claims that even experts can't judge wine accurately. What's the science behind the taste?
The similarities to cable arguments are kind of amusing.
Apologies for the pompous name but all the good ones have been taken ! It simply refelects my career and longtime interest in things to do with music and perception in an audiophile setting.

There seems to be a fair bit of confusion about trying to reproduce square waves using bandwidth-limited systems (and face it, all audio systems are bandwidth-limited), so I decided to try to write up some basic things that hopefully will help clear some of the confusion.
As we know, a square wave is the sum of all odd harmonics, according to the formula
By the way, that formula has nothing to do with Fourier analysis -

i have heard quite a lot of MDAC users have experienced audio drop outs when using this dac with devices running windows 8, will be interesting how the QDAC performs.
lots of boxes have arrived, nice fanless case, mobo, ssds, but the 2 components I ordered first the ram and CPU have yet to appear now 3days after the delivery date from amazon, so build is on hold until then!

It takes significant time to really study and learn any audio product, at least it does for me. So I have been venturing into the world of tubes seeking a particular sound that is very enjoyable to me. And of course, I have been trying to do so on the cheap. I would not be me if I did not at least try!
